(Ssorry 2 reference ur main 🙏) you recommended a few authors at one point that that included mary daly, and you mentioned that her views are outdated. i do plan to read her but until then, could i ask in what way her views are outdated? i keep seeing mentions of her name too in non theological feminist circles and something about dalyites?

(sorry for replying to this late i was in another country and didn't have my laptop lol) most people on this website would call mary daly a terf, although the term did not exist during the days of daly's scholarship. daly was trans-exclusionary and often viciously so. she was unable to modernize her thought to engage with evolving feminisms and thus she was unable to engage critically or helpfully with transgender rights. katherine o'donnell from university college dublin has written a paper on this topic that i highly recommend: daly was so focused on refuting aquinas and the oppressive patriarchal underpinnings of theology that she was unable to imagine a non-polarized approach to masculine/feminine binaries, and furthermore also unable to engage with critical race theory in a way that was helpful or progressive. to that end she was actually "called out" in a letter by audre lorde for her racial ignorance. for instance, daly compared a woman asking for equality in the church to a black person asking for equality in the klu klux klan. i get her point, but its an absolutely horrible analogy. i think daly allowed her frustration with religion to turn inward so much it made her myopic and her work often ineffective, but not without value.

daly eventually stopped doing theology work because she thought it was "hopelessly" patriarchal and shifted to philosophical feminism. prior to this shift she began incorporating wicca into her work, although she did not consider herself wiccan. i am also on the verge of giving up on theology because i agree with it being hopelessly patriarchal, but i do not consider wicca a viable alternative and i think philosophy is similarly, though not as intrinsically, as patriarchal as religion.

although i am not a terf and my work is focused on the rights of marginalized genders and sexualities, not exclusively women, i work with daly in my research. im mentioning this in an effort to combat the mentality that seems to be extremely prevalent these days where we completely reject certain thinkers (mainly women) for their problematic thought. scholarship is not a vacuum. no scholarship is presented as or should be taken as watertight, because we build on past scholarship in what? a hope that we can get closer to a truth. a scholar who presents their view unequivocally as the only correct one is a fascist and should not be paid attention to because by definition they cannot be engaged with effectively. this is not what daly was, although she was very misguided and lacked an effective cultural framework to understand the issue of trans rights and accept the invaluable role which trans people play in feminism and the rights of women and marginalized identities.

i would not call daly an influence on me, but because of my research her ideas- which were not original, are shared by grace jantzen, and come mainly from the work of erich fromm- about the patriarchy as necrophiliac are extremely important to me. i am using this idea to develop a better understanding of how patriarchy, including terfs, oppress the marginalized, especially woc and trans women. i do scholarship in awareness of daly's transphobia, and i take what is useful to modern feminism from her work because christian feminist theology would not be what it is today without daly. but the majority of scholarship i work with comes from queer and woc theologians: marcella althaus-reid, for instance, was a working class latina. audre lorde and bell hooks are much more important influences on me than daly will ever be. but i would not be a good scholar if i couldn't engage with problematic work and be able to derive what is both useful and not useful from it. if i simply ignored daly's scholarship, that would leave a gap in modern scholarship where terfs in theology could exploit that weakness and utilize daly against trans inclusion. by working with daly and, in a sense, using her work against itself (which one must do when working with theology because daly is right: it is hopelessly patriarchal), i am stopping up the gaps where bad scholarship could get through. i am exploiting the faults in daly's thought by drawing what is useful and using it in a new context that it was not intended for, but i am not dismissing daly because i couldn't do the thinking i am doing now without the work she did. she has created a foundation of both anti-patriarchy and anti-transness from which i can build my own anti-patriarchy, trans-inclusionary theology.

we come from contexts oppression. everything does. if we wipe out all of oppressive thought from our contemporary thinking and scholarship, we lose contexts, we lose the ability to combat the impression that is inevitable. how can i combat terfs now if i don't understand where they are getting their ideas from? how can i effectively show that trans exclusion is useless, anti-christian, anti-feminist and ideologically deadly if i haven't worked with the same scholarship terfs use for their ideas? i am more interested in showing how oppressions simply do not make logical sense than i am in keeping my scholarship "clean." i would rather wade into the mire to find the bottom of the pit than pretend the pit doesn't exist. i dont have to like daly, and i don't. i do have to be able make ideologies look stupid. and you. (not you specifically, anon, but anyone reading this who is under the idea that we shouldn't read problematic authors or scholars because their ideas are outdated and bad.) you should too.

To our eyes, there's something grotesque about a 33-year-old movie star pretending to be a hoydenish 12-year-old girl. But then there's also something grotesque about a 50-year-old diva playing Octavian or Cherubino. Operagoers accept the one, so why can't we accept the other? Moviegoers of the 1920s certainly did -- in fact, they demanded it of Mary Pickford, rejecting attempts in which she tried to play roles her own age. Pickford was exceptionally small, just a fraction over 5 feet, which helps her carry off the scenes in which she's performing with actual boys, though it's worth noticing that there are no other "girls" in these battling gangs, probably because putting Pickford up next to real girls would draw our attention to the maturity of her face. We become aware of that maturity most when we see her with other adults in the film, like 6-foot-tall William Haines, when only the costuming and her diminutive stature work to maintain the illusion. Still, Little Annie Rooney was near the end of Pickford's turns as a little waif. Four years later she would almost act her age in Coquette (Sam Taylor, 1929) and win a not particularly well-deserved Oscar for it, then follow up with some grownup roles, including Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew (Sam Taylor, 1929), in films that flopped and precipitated her retirement. Little Annie Rooney was cooked up by Pickford herself almost as a conscious farewell to the little girl in curls. You have to get yourself in the frame of mind of the original audiences to appreciate how good Pickford is in this hodgepodge of slapstick action and tearjerking family drama, but she really was a formidable actress.

Nella Blackburn, 89

Mrs. Nella Mae Durham Blackburn, age 89 of Roaring River passed away Monday, July 8, 2019 at her home.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be in Durham Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 12:30 prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Blackburn was born August 20, 1929 in Wilkes County to Erastus Jones and Dossie Clementine Wiles Durham.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband; Jesse Eli Blackburn, one sister; Evelyn Durham Welborn and one brother; William Cody Durham.

She is survived by seven sisters; Darlene Durham Grit of Roaring River, Susie Durham Hawkins of North Wilkesboro, Violet Durham Jolly of Winston-Salem, Perdetha Durham Transou of Gaffney, SC, Betty Jo Lovell of Princeton, WV, Mary Ann Casey of Bolvia, and Patsy Ingram of Raleigh and two brothers; E.J. Durham and wife Patricia of North Wilkesboro and Hayden Durham and wife Linda Sue of Roaring River and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Durham Family Cemetery, c/o Anita Tharpe, 2580 Greenhorn Road, Roaring River, NC 28669.

Dorothy Poole, 92

Dorothy Lee Poole, age 92, of Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 at Wilkes Senior Village. She was born January 2, 1927 in Catawba County to Vance and Minnie Thomas Poole. Dorothy was a lifetime member of St. John Holiness Church in Wilkesboro, holding many positions in her church, including Treasurer. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Rachel Reddick, Ethel Short, Eula Mae Brown, Bessie Poole, Leon, Burgan, Harold and Jessie Poole.

Surviving are her sons, Steven Poole of Wilkesboro, Larry Poole and spouse Carrie Bell of South Carolina; granddaughter, Stephanie Parker and spouse Josh of Jacksonville, N.C.; great granddaughter, Elizabeth Watkins of Greensboro; host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Miller Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Scenic Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 6:00 until 8:00 Tuesday night. Flowers will be accepted. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Jenkins, 77

Mrs. Betty Jean Billings Jenkins, age 77 of Hays, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services were July 9, at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Donnie Shumate and Rev. Shane Jenkins officiating. Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Jenkins was born August 28, 1941 in Wilkes County to Ulen Billings and Juanita Wingler Billings. She retired from CATO's and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Jenkins is survived by her husband; Robert Lee Jenkins of the home, two sons; Richard Lee Jenkins and wife Lori of Yadkinville and Gregory Scott Jenkins and wife Jeanne of Burlington, three grandchildren; Cammi Leigh Jenkins, Emma Michelle Jenkins and Trevor Scott Jenkins, step grandchildren; Zach Hollar and Justin Gambill, step great-grandchildren; Kelsey Grace Hollar and Allison Faith Hollar and a sister; JoAnn Huffman of Statesville.

Pallbearers will be Jared Wiles, Jacob Wiles, Trevor Jenkins, Joseph Wiles, Joshua Thornton and Zack Hollar.

Kathy Miller, 55

Kathy Louise Miller, age 55, of Millers Creek, passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Curis of Wilkesboro. She was born April 20, 1964 in Wilkes County to Carl and Ennis Barthenia Jarvis Miller. Kathy attended Maple Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are her parents, Carl and Bartha Miller of Millers Creek; sister, Crystal Miller of North Wilkesboro; and brothers, Michael Miller of North Wilkesboro, Tim Miller and spouse Sheila of Taylorsville.

No service will be held. The family has requested no flowers. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105-9956.

Jerry Hamby, 81

Mr. Jerry Gray Hamby, age 81 of Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at his home.

Funeral services were July 5, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Brady Hayworth officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Hamby was born September 7, 1937 in Wilkes County to Arvill Henson and Pearl Claudine Rhymer Hamby. He retired from Carolina Mirror after 37 years of service and joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in 1958 and became a Deacon in 1967 where he served until his death.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother; Gary Hamby.

He is survived by his wife; Shirley Parsons Hamby of the home, two daughters; Cheryl Church and husband Scott of Wilkesboro and Angela Gray Hamby missing since October 1982, two grandchildren; Adrienne Church and Elizabeth Cooke and one great grandchild; Julian Aoki and a sister; Brenda Trivette of North Wilkesboro.

Carolyn McDowell, 73

Mrs. Carolyn Jane McGrady McDowell, age 73 of Moravian Falls, passed away July 1, 2019 at her home.

Memorial services were July 8, at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Steve Snipes officiating.

Mrs. McDowell was born May 5, 1946 in Ashe County to Dwight Isaiah McGrady and Grace Dean Lovette McGrady. She was a member of North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church and a Realtor with Realty One.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother; Jerry McGrady.

She is survived by a daughter; Amanda McDowell Crafton and husband Jeff of Mooresville, a son; Raymond Anderson McDowell and wife Gina of Raleigh, four grandchildren; Maxwell Crafton, Gabrielle Crafton, McKinley Dawn McDowell-Santiago and husband Hector and Olivia Grace McDowell and a brother; Roger McGrady and wife Katherine of Wilkesboro.

Berlene Gant, 93

Mrs. Berlene Pearson Gant, age 93 of Moravian Falls passed away Monday, July 1, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services were July 4, at Moravian Falls Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Sturgill and Rev. Arvil Perry officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Gant was born February 7, 1926 in Wilkes County. Mrs. Gant was a special education teacher, she began her career in Welcome, NC, she then moved to Wilkes County and ended her teaching career in the Wilkes County School System after teaching for 27 years. Mrs. Gant attended Guilford College where she played on the basketball team, she was one of the bell ringers for the chapel, active in Christian organizations, a Sunday School Teacher at Moravian Falls Baptist Church for many years and she was the oldest member of Moravian Falls Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother; Martha Naomi Pearson Smithey and step-father; William Shafter Smithey, her husband; William "Bill" Arthur Gant, one daughter; Martha Jolaine Barlow and one son; Daryl Lee Gant.

She is survived by two daughters; Linda Jeanette Gant of Wilkesboro and Marcia O'Donnell of Moravian Falls, and two sons; William Ronald Gant of North Wilkesboro and Norman Dewayne Gant and wife Paula of Cutler Bay, FL, ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Park Road, suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28209.

Truman Gaultney, 78

Mr. Truman Arlin Gaultney, age 78 of Boomer passed away Monday, July 1, 2019 at his home.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Mr. Gaultney was born July 17, 1940 in Williamsville, MO to Frank and Della Mae Luke Gaultney. Mr. Gaultney was a hardworking, loving husband, father and grandfather. He lead by example and was a member of Boomer Advent Christian Church. He enjoyed his grandchildren. He was respected and loved by those who knew his kind and gentle nature, he helped others and loved all members of his family, nephews, nieces, brothers and sisters.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter; Angela Gaultney and two sisters; Lois DeShaney and Dorothy Livingston and one brother; Cledis Gaultney.

He is survived by his wife; Ollie Sandlin Gaultney of the home, one daughter; Carolyn Jones of Boomer, five grandchildren; Robert and Ross Rushin, Emily Brooks, Mark Brooks, Jr. and Shawna Swaim, three great grandchildren; Jacob Swaim and Camron and Christian Brooks.

Robert Pearson, 49

Mr. Robert Pearson, 49, of Morganton, passed away on Saturday June 29, 2019.

Robert was born on November 2, 1969 in Wilkes County to Alton Rayvon Pearson and Lilly Carolyn Triplette Pearson.

Robert is survived by his parents; brother, Dennis Ray Pearson of Wilkesboro; nieces, Amanda Parish, Raven Pearson, Amber Pearson; nephews, Colton Pearson, Dallas Pearson; great nephew, Jameson Parish and great nieces, Kimberlyn Pearson and Lillian Brittian.

The family will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. on July 13th 2019 at Boomer Advent Christian Church in Boomer.

Pastor David Jones will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes P.O. Box 396 Moravian Falls, NC 28654 to help with final expenses, or Mt.Valley Hospice Elkin, 688 North Bridge Street, Elkin NC 28621.

Timothy Johnston, 68

Timothy Leon Johnston, age 68, of Hays, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living in Boone. He was born October 27, 1950 in Wilkes County to Carey and Mabel Fern Owens Johnston. Timothy was a member of Hinshaw Baptist Church and was All Conference in football at Wilkes Central High School. He was involved with the local Jaycees. Timothy enjoyed singing, golf and helping anyone in need. Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Kenneth Johnston.

Surviving are his daughters, Deidra Dickens and spouse Eddie of Charlotte, Carey Barefoot and spouse Brian of Huntersville, Meredith Hayes and fiancé Mitchell Weot of Millers Creek; sister, Mary Ellen Edmiston of North Wilkesboro; brothers, Larry Johnston and spouse Oma Lea of North Wilkesboro, Joe Johnston of Wilkesboro, Mike Johnston and spouse Cheryl of Haymarket, Virginia; sister-in-law, Sherry Johnston of Knoxville, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and his canine companion, Blue.

Celebration of Life will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, July 20, upstairs at the Wilkes Heritage Museum in Wilkesboro (please enter thru back entrance). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 9, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 or to Fairplains Baptist Church, 141 Fairplains Church Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

David Jackson, 85

David L. Jackson, 85, of Chattanooga, TN passed away Sunday, May 26, 2019. There he was a retired teacher and a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church. Formerly a member of the Masonic Lodge and The Shriners. Born in Lenoir, NC, David was the son of the late George T. Jackson (Helen J. Jackson), Grandson of the late Arthur Jackson (Ila Laws Jackson) all of Wilkes County.

David graduated from Pearisburg High School (VA), Hiwassee College (TN) and attended Emory & Henry College (VA). He worked in Advertising for many years and eventually taught Graphic Arts.

David was an imaginative soul who handcrafted various items for friends and family. His sister recalls a painting he made of her as a child sitting on the porch of their family home. From reproducing a model of his grandmothers house to painting a mural on a restaurant wall, his creative talents spanned many platforms. He was a Music Director for various churches in his early days.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Nancy M. Jackson; daughter, Pamela S. Jackson; sister, Hope Jackson Bowen of Charlotte, NC; brother, George T. Jackson Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

Interment will be held Wednesday, July 10, at 11:00 a.m. in the Moravian Falls Cemetery.

Miller Funeral Service is handling the committal.

The Very Best of Frieze New York

The sixth edition of Frieze New York kicked off on Thursday morning at Randall’s Island, when an eager VIP preview crowd filtered into the fair’s expansive tent to visit over 200 galleries hailing from 30 countries and six continents. From John Currin’s rarely seen drawings to Dora Budor’s bizarre Leonardo DiCaprio homage, here are our highlights.

Focus, Booth D21

Simone Subal

It’s hard to miss this mini-survey of radical, neon-laced works from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s. Large-scale paintings like Double Vision (1981) and Express (1972), in which female figures assume powerful poses, pop from the booth’s walls. Kogelnik grew up in Vienna but developed her singular style in New York. There, while in dialogue with Oldenburg and Lichtenstein, she “translated a Pop vocabulary into a feminist agenda,” explained gallery owner Simone Subal, who has represented the late artist’s estate since 2012.

The drawings, sculptures, and paintings here, priced between $15,000 and $230,000, show not only the diversity of the artist’s output, but also her influence on recent generations. In particular, young female figurative painters, like Emily Mae Smith (seen nearby at Rodolphe Janssen’s booth), are looking to Kogelnik’s pioneering approach to fragmentation and flattening of the female form. Simone Subal’s presentation scored this year’s Frieze Stand Prize, awarded to the best booth from a gallery 12 years or younger. —Alexxa Gotthardt

Marian Goodman Gallery has become known for its elegant and curatorial approach to fair booths, historically focusing on one artist with an immersive installation that stops you in your tracks. This year, the gallery presents a work by Albanian-born, Berlin-based artist Sala. Bridges in the Doldrums, 2016, puts Sala and musician André Vida’s 2015 musical composition “To Each His Own (in Bridges)”— —constructed from the transitional bridges of 74 different songs—into a sculptural format. The stark but inviting booth features four drums—three suspended from the ceiling and one resting on the floor—that each emit recordings from layers of the composition, causing the drumsticks to lightly pitter-patter on the drum skins. Visitors can also don headphones to hear the full sound piece, an alternately disjointed and harmonious tune that takes you far away from the surrounding bustle of the fair. —Marina Cashdan

The Brussels-based gallery delivers an exceptional presentation of the sought-after Canadian artist (who recently lost his New York representation with the now-shuttered Andrea Rosen). Fairgoers weaved among new sculptures and wall-based panels (over a dozen works in total) to ogle the artist’s mixed-media heads—resin casts of heads that meld together fake hair, foam, shards of glass, text, bronze, and gold, among other materials. One resembles a zombie Abraham Lincoln; another sports a crystal-encrusted hole in its face. —Casey Lesser

A giant photograph of now-President Donald Trump, pointedly hung beside a portrait of a Mexican migrant worker, makes for a timely and not-so-subtle centerpiece at Nathalie Obadia’s solo booth for Serrano. The booth comprises 12 works from the artist’s “America” series (2001–04), photographed over the course of three years post-9/11 with the intention of distilling the nation’s collective identity. The series kicked off with rather direct subject matter—firefighters, an FBI agent—but grew into a wider portrait of America, with sitters spanning a Boy Scout to a pimp. Serrano also brought celebrities before his lens, Trump and Snoop Dogg among them; shown together, no single face is more or less American than any other. —Molly Gottschalk

The Approach

The painter, who cut his teeth at Cooper Union, was more or less unknown before his death in 2013; Matthew Higgs was instrumental in rediscovering his work shortly thereafter, and showcasing it at White Columns. The compositions here—all done on slightly ragged, unprecious pieces of plywood—depict rough, quasi-abstract landscapes. (A gallery representative told me that Lynch was greatly inspired by traditional Chinese painting, an influence that he wears on his sleeve.) A number of gentle drawings of birds round out a presentation that is quietly affecting. —Scott Indrisek

Honor Fraser

A peer of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Scharf made it through the chaos of the ’80s and into a long career that has included museum commissions and omnipresent public murals. This packed booth looks back on the work he made in New York between 1978 and 1985, including a telephone ornamented with plastic dinosaurs and a series of enormous boomboxes tricked out with his signature in-your-face color palette and happy alien blobs. It’s a sort of teaser for an exhibition opening this October at the Museum of Modern Art, focusing on the legacy of Club 57, an East Village venue and community that played a vital role in Scharf’s early career. —SI

Martos Gallery

In the mid-’90s, Rosenberg made “Head Shots,” a series of uncomfortably close portraits of men, including artists such as John Baldessari. “I photographed men seemingly caught at the moment of orgasm. I intended to show men in ecstasy,” she wrote of the project, “something rarely seen in newspapers, advertisements, or even pornography.” The late, great Mike Kelley was one of her subjects. Recently, Rosenberg was going through her own archives and came upon a roll of undeveloped film. It turned out to be a whole slew of images of Kelley writhing ecstatically. The entire grid of black-and-white photos will run you around $70,000, though they’re also sold individually. Kudos to Martos for taking a risk on such an uncommon, intimately awkward work—the only piece it is showcasing in the entire booth. —SI

Currin brings his drawings out of the studio for the first time. “He’s kept them very close to him,” said the gallery’s Rebecca Sternthal, standing in front of a salon-style hanging of several hundred framed works on paper. To make the selection for Frieze, Sternthal and her colleague Andisheh Avini helped Currin comb through over 6,000 sketches that had amassed in his Flatiron studio since the 1980s. The artist uses them as fodder for his renowned paintings, which feature semi-nude, pleasure-seeking women who allude to the subjects of the Old Masters.

Most drawings on view are the size of a piece of notebook paper (charmingly, some come complete with the ragged fringe that results from tearing the page from its spiral-bound pad), and show the diverse range of characters that end up populating lushly appointed rooms on Currin’s large-scale canvases. But on paper, his subjects are mostly rendered alone, on uncluttered backdrops, so that their features are the focus. —AG

CANADA

This booth is the brainchild of gallery artist Hundley, who set out to present a replica of his own Brooklyn apartment, split into separate living room, dining room, and bedroom areas. He’s filled the faux-domestic space with choice works by fellow artists (plus a few of his own), as well as his own furniture (including tables he made). The selections include pieces from artists on CANADA’s roster, like Matt Connors, as well as others, including Etel Adnan and Grandma Moses. The unique setting gives cohesion to a group show that otherwise lacks a firm theme, smartly offering fairgoers a vision of what it actually looks like to live with great art. —CL

LeWitt debuts a fresh group of sculptures, made specifically for the fair, working with the Oslo-based gallery for the first time (and in advance of a solo with them next spring). The young New York-based artist is the daughter of Sol LeWitt, though she sets herself apart from his weighted legacy. Her minimal sculptures are made from cylinders and bricks of foam—which she casts and dyes herself—as well as latex and plastic. Works on view (priced from $2,500 to $12,000) span sweeping, curtain-like installations in pale yellow and purple, as well as stools resembling swollen mushrooms. —CL

Thomson & Craighead

Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead, who together form this London-based duo, coopt images and data from the internet to explore what it means to be human in the 21st century. The strongest work here, Help Yourself (2016), offers visitors headphones and an option of 32 self-help podcasts to plug into (the themes range from Finding Love to How to Attract Money). A found abstract video provides a hypnotic visual accompaniment. “We live in a world where mindfulness and self-improvement is a central marketing strategy,” says Thomson. Self-affirmation “is a phenomenon that we live with, and we’re trying to present it in a way that makes us see the phenomenon, rather than use it for its therapeutic effects.” —MG

This young Scottish, London-based painter is the standout of Grimm’s eye-catching booth. In two small paintings, women gaze into mirrors while applying eyeshadow in bright blue streaks, jarring pops of color against the otherwise muted palette. (Both sold on the first day, making room for a larger presentation of Walker’s canvases, priced £4,000 to £25,000, planned for day two.) The gallery will also unveil additional cinematic scenes featuring women in intimate environments: primping, or captured in moments of contemplation and repose. The central theme in Walker’s work “is the human condition in a postmodern, desensitized world,” explained the gallery’s Margot Samel. The booth teases an upcoming show by Walker, date still to be determined, at the Amsterdam-based Grimm’s first New York outpost, which will open on the Bowery this June. —AG

The Harrisons

A metronome set to the tempo of a heartbeat is the quiet centerpiece of this Los Angeles gallery’s booth, which focuses on protest art. It’s courtesy of a relatively unknown pair of artists, husband-and-wife Helen and Newton Harrison (88 and 85 years old, respectively), pioneers of the “eco-art” movement. The work is representative of the couple’s call for collective solutions to climate change—often made in collaboration with scientists, historians, activists, architects, urban planners, and other artists. Flanked by brass panels that address the urgent concerns of the artists—ending with the line “Pay Attention to the Extreme Costs of Extreme Belief”—the consistent tempo puts you both at ease and on edge, listening as time ticks away. —MC

At Frieze London, Rafman drew quite a crowd for his four-minute, virtual reality underworld filled with serpents and trolls. This time around, those who slip into his secret movie theater will be indulged with a full hour’s screening of his excellent new film, Dream Journal (2017). Think your dreams are interesting? Try entering the mind of an artist who for years has brought us into uncanny collisions of the physical and digital worlds. Computer-generated erotica blends with bizarre vignettes: A woman snorts Ketamine from two straws while riding in a boat with a muscular red creature; a topless woman lays down on a pentagram in an STD clinic; and a little armor-clad girl chases her own eyeballs through a hedge maze. —MG

In 1932, 69 stories above Manhattan, an anonymous photographer snapped a portrait of construction workers eating lunch while precariously perched on a narrow beam. The photograph, a publicity image for the Rockefeller Center skyscraper, would go on to become one of the most iconic images from this era of New York’s history, later plastered on everything from posters to coffee cups. But likely only a single vintage print remains, says Daniel Blau’s Ryan Adams. Printed just two weeks after the shot was first taken, it’s on offer at Frieze for $126,500 (including tax). While the original glass-plate negative is today stored in a limestone cave in Pennsylvania, it’s broken into five pieces, making this legendary American print all the more invaluable. —MG

This restaging of an interactive work by the Slovakian artist involves an ongoing chain of exchange. When I visited shortly after the fair’s preview opened, a performer was sitting at a small desk, trying to trade someone a pen for an equally “valuable” possession of their own. Throughout the course of the morning, various objects changed hands—one guest gave up a €50 bill, which was later swapped by a lucky barterer for an American $20 bill. When I returned a few hours later to check up on the piece’s progress, a rather unusual object was up for grabs: An intricate plastic pill box, stocked with an eclectic selection of prescription medication (including Paxil, a version of Xanax, and a handful of unlabeled brown tablets). This stranger’s mobile medicine cabinet was all mine, in exchange for a dog-eared copy of a Mary Gaitskill novel. ��SI

This giant painting is part of Rauschenberg’s 1984–91 project “Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange (ROCI),” for which he visited 10 countries and produced new, site-inspired work and exhibitions in each nation, with the goal of promoting world peace through cultural exchange. Created during his time in Venezuela, the vibrant canvas is significant in that it marks the artist’s return to silkscreening (which he had sworn off in 1964), includes prints made from his personal photographs (a new development at the time for the artist), and toured prominently in shows that celebrated the ROCI output, including exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Museo Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo in Caracas. The massive piece speaks to the cultural climate of Venezuela in 1985. Rauschenberg incorporated locally sourced fabrics and topical motifs, like an image of Pope John Paul, who had visited Venezuela that year. —CL

It’s rare to find work by the reclusive British land artist Long at a fair. So it’s a bit of a shock to see his White Onyx Line (1990)—one from a series he made in the material—on the gray carpeting of this gallery’s booth. Typically installed in an open space and on a very different surface—wood or concrete—the placement here might seem to undermine its integrity. Still, it’s an exciting opportunity to experience even a taste of the meditative quality of Long’s work. —MC

Adam Pendleton, three scenes/the voice, 2017

Pendleton is best known for silkscreened canvases and mirrors that play with language, but he has also staged performances—most notably a 2007 commission for Performa that adopted (and subverted) the loose format of an energetic church revival. Here, he’s getting ambitious in a small space, bringing opera and gospel singers, as well as a string quartet, into an environment hung with work that alludes to Malcolm X’s 1964 speech “The Ballot or the Bullet.” It should be an unpredictable affair—as Pendleton told me when I visited his studio earlier this week, he isn’t even quite sure what the final results will be. —SI

A teaser for Budor’s performance on Frieze’s website was enticingly cryptic, describing her project as a “cinematic doubling to question perception and reality.” The artist’s own Instagram account merely posted a photo of a man wearing a big gold watch. Neither fully prepared fairgoers for Budor’s mischievous performance, which kicked off on opening day. It involved three men roaming the fair, each dressed as characters played by Leonardo DiCaprio in blockbuster films (The Revenant, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Catch Me if You Can). The performance was a potent—and wildly entertaining—meditation on the intersection of celebrity and the art world. (The real DiCaprio, of course, is also an art collector and art fair regular.) —AG
